Casper Ravn-Sørensen: Be prepared on giving up a lot of things
When he first came to Copenhagen, Alpha57 CEO Casper Ravn-Sørensen had almost nothing. He left his home with nothing more than a crazy idea about that online marketing business he wanted to evoke. There were times when he had no money. He says that, during the worst periods, it was his girlfriend that paid the bills for both of them. A lot of people would call him “just another dreamer”, or a “sloth” that doesn’t do anything and just lets other people care about him. But he surrounded himself with an inspiring group of people that gave him enough space so that he could pursue his dream.
When I first started my own company years ago, I practically lived as a homeless person. I was dirt poor as all the money I would get, I would then invest in the company project. Therefore, I didn’t have anything I could spend on my needs. It was my lovely girlfriend that was more or less, covering all our costs at that time.
Being passionate is the key to success
That is why Casper Ravn-Sørensen, todays angel investor and mentor for entrepreneurs, says the most important thing when it comes to starting a project or a company, is actually having the passion for the work you are doing and being surrounded with right people that would support you.
He and his friend established the company Media Denmark ApS specialized in online marketing, offering its clients different online solutions based on their business needs. The company was structured as a partnership.
We were two partners that manages Media Denmark ApS. We supported each other and were both passionate about our business concept, and wanted to further grow the business.
Sharing the ideas and spreading internationally
Today, Casper is involved and invests in various project and online firms where he supports and spreads ideas, his own contacts and experiences. One of those online companies is Alpha57.com. The company is focused on working with clients in all European countries and not just in Denmark. That is why Casper likes to say he would invest primarily in those companies and projects that have the possibility to expand internationally.
It is nice to have Denmark as your base. I personally, consider Denmark as a playground where all the football matches start from. It is important to win on your field, on a place where you are the host, but as any other football team, you should be able to win in other countries; when you are away from home, where there are a lot of different players that have different winning tactics. You should think of everything like this – if your idea can manage to get on top in a lot of different markets with the right capital, network and knowledge, then you are on the right path.

Casper Ravn-Sørensen – being just another person with an idea is not enough
It’s simply not enough, having the idea itself. You should be able to reveal your ideas and thoughts and speak them out. Tell to the whole world that your story is magnificent. It’s not worth having a great idea hidden in the closet. Through the years of experience, I have seen many people with wonderful ideas. But they were just sitting there doing nothing with them for the rest of their lives. You should have the guts to speak through, everything you have to say. Nothing is perfect in this world, and it is just nonsense even thinking a product has to be perfect before going out in the market. I have always had a certain philosophy regarding startups:” If a project is ready to make the money, you should let it out, even though some trifles aren’t in their place. Everything can work out during the whole process. At that point, you should react fast. But mistakes can be corrected while you are already earning money. You should always be prepared to make mistakes. People who don’t make mistakes, are simply not doing enough work.”
Investing in seed companies
For Casper Ravn-Sørensen and his partner Mads Emil Fast Dahlerup with whom he established Dotcom-Capital, one of the most important things is that the people interested in making their own business and making their project come true are young. They appreciate the young spirit and freshness young people can bring. One could think they remind them of them when they were youngsters, starting their own companies and projects from scratch, but with one difference – at that point, they didn’t have any support, neither material nor in the form of knowledge. That is why Casper would like to motivate young people by giving them wind in the back. He thinks that, in that way, a lot of young entrepreneurs with great ideas wouldn’t give up and that a lot of new ideas would see the face of the day. On that matter Casper says:

As an investor I decided to reach out to entrepreneurs, and help them grow successful businesses. I like young entrepreneurs; they hold a better understanding of modern technology and how it can change the business game. Therefore, together with my partner Mads Emil Fast Dahlerup we founded Dotcom-Capital. The company offers different kind of resources; knowledge, experience, networks and capital that helps many businesses get out from the ground.
Finding the right investor and following your dream
So if you think you can just develop your idea and send it to all the investors you can find online and someone will read it, you are wrong. It would just be a waste of your time and energy. There are a lot of investors who have different ideas on various projects. Some of them want to invest in projects that are bound to one country and one mentality of people. On the other hand, there are investors who would finance the ideas involved in just one type of business and wouldn’t bother for anything else. Casper Ravn-Sørensen would advise you that you investigate your idea very well, get to know all the aspects and outcomes of it, and then, after all that hard work, there’s still more. You should pay attention to all the investors possible, see their previous investment projects and check up on their own ideas and expectations. In that way, you can present your idea as something unique, that only one investor can and would finance, and you would have the right amount of passion for that one investor whom you are presenting your idea to.
It’s very important to do a detailed research about your potential investors, and find out what they are looking for. What previous projects or companies they have been investing in. What your business can offer to them, or how they can help you growing your business not only financially. But the key is matching your business with the right investor and always follow your dreams.
